"Safe but not exciting"
These speakers have had some great reviews but I was a little disappointed when I got them home.
They have a tendency to throw sound at you rather than deliver it, more like a wall of sound rather than a detailed performance. The top end feels restrained and you're just willing it to go a little further in to the upper FQ ranges but is doesn't. The bottom end is definitely there but it has quite a soft, warm, woolly sound and can flood the midrange. Picture a band with the drummer at the back and the vocalist at the front. Unlike Tannoy, KEF and others the 684's don't project the midrange too well so it gives the impression that the vocalist is between the drummer and the bassist.
I was so looking forward to owning a pair of these but no matter how much I tried I just couldn't live with them. They're not poor performers but they're not the best either. You could quite easily stick them in a corner and just let them pump out a few tunes and be very happy with them but if you're looking for something to give you goose bumps and excitement look elsewhere.
