A friend bought a set of Tannoy 603s and was extolling their virtues, and at the time I was looking for something a little louder and more capable than the trusty Mission 600s I'd purchased some 9 years previously.

I was looking for more "oomph" - complete sonic package with good bass response and accurate rendition of all music styles at all volumes when the speakers are paired with a suitable amplifier. I sought advice from a local hi-fi shop (now no longer there, and nor are any of their competitors) and bought the Tannoy 611 speakers from new, and went with good quality speaker wires to bi-wire them.

I already had a 40W amplifier and upgraded to a Yamaha AS-500 to pair with the 611s, as it was also louder, recommended and could be bi-wired to the speakers, which was all the rage in hi-fi at the time (early 90s in the UK).

I was impressed with the sound then and still am - full spectrum of sound for what I like and at a reasonable price, with enough guts to give volume when desired and just build the sound without distortion or colouration. I use the floor spikes through the carpet to mechanically connect with the floor boards to enhance the sound and prefer CD - currently Arcam Alpha 7 - as a source, but have recently added a Yamaha MusicCast Wi-Fi connected streaming device to the system for convenience when working from home or cooking.

Every genre from music concrete, classical, jazz, heavy rock, metal, soft rock, folk, vocal, soft ensemble music, funk and driving dance styles all work well, as do more esoteric sound streams like whale song, rain in the jungle, soft-spoken ASMR and everything I have thrown at it.

Presently considering adding a SubWoofer for fun, and to annoy the wife.

Bought these speakers when they first came out (early 90's) teamed with a Pioneer A400GTE(Tom Evans modified) and a Marantz CD63 Signature. The sound is superb, the Tannoy 611's have gone through parties at disco levels, been abused by the kids and still sound superb. Positioning isn't critical, they can be tight up against a wall if space is of a premium. Just bought my son a pair of Tannoy 603's for his system and they sound pretty good following in the Tannoy tradition. I have owned Mission speakers and they are good, but not in the same league as the Tannoys. The other bonus with the 611's is the high sensitivity (91db) meaning even a low powered amplifier can drive them to window shaking levels.
